My friend told me I should write about patience. What’s to say? I am not! It made me think of what I need to work on as my knee heals from the break and surgery.
I wrote this on April 13, 2024. It seems like it has been raining more than not since I broke my knee. That’s helpful since it doesn’t make me want to go outside. But on those few days that it is sunny, I just want to run down the steps to see what’s happening in my garden. I am resigned to the back patio for now since I can’t manage steps, but here is what I can see.
The bees are very happily buzzing around all the borage I planted. The borage flowers are wonderful to pick and add to salads, just like my nasturtiums that they are mingling with. For me, leaning forward to pick them is not a great idea yet. The grass sprouts up between the plants but I can’t pull them right now either. They will have to be part of the mix.
Last Sunday, between storms, I sent my husband out to clip lettuce in our raised bed. He did bring back a huge bag, but I could not see exactly what was happening there. Yesterday I noticed some of the lettuce had bolted as it had grown tall enough to see. It’s raining again today and yesterday, so no picking right now.
A friend came for a visit last week and cleaned out four small ceramic pots that I use for seedlings. She also brought over the seed starting mixture that I love from Gardener’s Supply. Today I see two sets of plants coming up. Two are green zebra tomatoes. They are green with yellow stripes. Two years ago I grew the biggest green zebras I every have seen. Usually they are a rather small tomato. I think of the taste as smoky with a little acid. They play off beautifully with my other heirlooms. I also started two pineapple tomatoes which are huge yellow slicing tomatoes with a red blush. They make wonderful sandwiches in the summer.
Another friend came by and told me I had little figs coming out of one of my fig trees that nearly died a year ago. How exciting! For now I have to be happy seeing out of the eyes of others.
Currently I am waiting for my peas. I grow several varieties including the original sugar snap pea, purple snap peas, petit pois, and english peas. A week ago there were pods just coming out so maybe at another friend’s visit, I will have my peas.
Surprisingly, i do not have a sweet pea flowers yet. I do have a few plants but hardly any came up this year. Hopefully with all the rain we are getting, more flowers should pop up in May. Below is the Magnolia Vine that I spoke about in my last post.

Happy Gardening Everyone!
