I have a very old cactus growing in a pot by our back patio. It has been there since we moved into the house. Friends have suggested I get rid of the ugly, old, half dead looking cactus. It is true that it is old and grey, but when it blooms, it is gorgeous. The only problem is it blooms at night, like the full moon, and closes in the day time. The flowers last about two days and then turn black and fall off. The scent of the flowers is very strong and sweet smelling. Once I see the flowers develop on the side of the cactus, I get a sense of when they will open. It is a beautiful show you don’t want to miss. Our two flowers opened after a very warm day and still warm night shortly after the June full moon.
Who could get rid of a cactus that produces such beauty even though it happens only once or twice a year?
It is truly beautiful and I love how it blooms only at night. KEEP IT!
