APRIL SHOWERS

On the morning of March 31st, I woke up and went outside to the smell of rain coming. It had cooled off and clouded up over night. By late afternoon, light showers came down. Accu Weather said we would get about .05 inch. I believed it because the rain was so light. But somewhere late in the evening, we got a big cloudburst that gave us just under and inch of rain. It rained after midnight another .05 inches.

It was a lean rain season since January, but we have gotten rain in each month This bodes well for the flowers I planted. Already a lot of flowers are up California poppies, marshmallows, borage, calendula, coreopsis, blue salvia (above), and nasturiums. The rain has also brought out the goats to clear the dying weeds.

With all the borage, my yard is filled with the buzzing sound of bees. The butterflies, however, have dropped off. Usually in May we get another flood of butterflies as the flowers are really popping.

Meanwhile, my grape vines are growing out of control and I need to get in there to clip them back and tie up the vines. It has become like a jungle as I was sick for 12 days and didn’t get any work done.

Our weather pattern since January has been rain followed by Santa Ana winds that dry out all the good moisture the rain brought us On Friday, the winds started with gusts 35-40 mph. It was so wild that we stayed inside in spite of the sun and warm weather. Saturday the temps rose to 89 degrees here but luckily the winds were not as strong.

Who knows what the rest of April will bring. As I look at the weather reports, we are suppose to get more rain next Friday and Saturday. We shall see.

Meanwhile, Happy Easter and Happy Spring to all.

I've been observing nature since I was a child. Whether it was plants, trees, birds, animals, insects or marine life, I've always had an interest in what was happening in the natural world. I can thank my parents for all the long walks through the woods, on beaches, and just sitting outside in nature. Now I am more concerned about the survival of biodiversity, our planet, and all that makes up our life here on Earth.
