MAY SHOWERS BRING JUNE FLOWERS

I awoke to the sweet sound of rain last Monday morning. It’s mid May so rain is a gift in California. My cat Lilly woke me early to let her out. She loves drinking the rain water from our table on the porch. For a cat, she loves water and even the rain.

I planted new flower seeds the day before of summer zinnias in deep shades of reds and purples, yellow and orange and even a florescent green one. Zinnias are happy flowers. Their bright faces light up a yard. They have been a favorite of mine since childhood.

Now a week later, I already see the seeds bursting through the ground. The coreopsis are also blooming. We have three different types – Mardi Gras, laceolata, and giant coreopsis that grow 6 or 7 feet tall. They pop up in the most unlikely places, carried by the birds and the wind. My garden does not want for bees. They are everywhere busily collecting their pollen. I have never been stung by the bees. We both live in harmony together. They do their job and I do mine.

I've been observing nature since I was a child. Whether it was plants, trees, birds, animals, insects or marine life, I've always had an interest in what was happening in the natural world. I can thank my parents for all the long walks through the woods, on beaches, and just sitting outside in nature. Now I am more concerned about the survival of biodiversity, our planet, and all that makes up our life here on Earth.
